"Our world is bathed in light, and every aspect of the light we see traces to its interaction with the atoms and molecules that make up our world. Light, matter, and their interaction form the inseparable fabric of our visual world." 2008 Dr. Dan Dill, Prof of Chemistry, Boston University

There is something about floating and suspension… about weightlessness that appeals to my imagination. This resistance of gravity. Clouds float. Memories float. Experience floats. All possibility floats... and these figures float. Light reveals, gives form, presence and substance, texture and colour. Yet we are filled with emptiness.

"We are made of star stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself." Carl Sagan, astronomer, astrophysicist, cosmologist.

Science has shown us that on the subatomic level we are mostly empty space. We are not solid. Our physical human form, made of light, is at once both waves and particles vibrating at particular frequencies and according to quantum physics, only appearing to be solid when consciously observed.

What is happening within this space? Therein lies Alchemy.

At the heart of this work, like the Philosopher's Stone of the Alchemists changing base materials to precious gold, is the desire for transformation to a higher, transcendent state of being.

"All the physical matters are composed of vibration." Dr. Max Planck, Physicist, originator of Quantum Theory

Change the pattern of frequency and the matter changes form. Alchemy.

With these paintings I seek to open gateways into the timeless, touch infinity, hold secrets and reveal more. They are an exploration of a painter's paradox of how to express shifting change and timelessness within the static frozen moment of a painting.

From meditation, I draw on the experience of touching presence, the change that occurs within the invisible, deep stillness. Through the liminal, across the threshold, stepping into the unknown, beyond certainty and into the unfathomable, the duality of the inner and outer worlds coexist. Physicality and spirituality, sensuously conscious form and formlessness, logic and imagination, the dream and the reality.

Floating, these figures are not passive or inert - they speak of an innate potency. In painting the visible, I allow a gap, inferring what isn't seen. The state of transition from the old to the new, in the space between is the void in which the magic happens.
